Water Softener vs. Water Conditioner – Similarities and Differences
The terms ‘water softener’ and ‘water conditioner’ are often used interchangeably. However, they are two different appliances with some similarities that make many confuse them as one and the same thing.
Let’s take a quick look at the key similarities and differences between these water treatment systems to develop a better understanding:
Water Softener and Water Conditioner – The Similarity
There is only one thing common in a water softener and water conditioner, i.e., they are both used to treat hard water.
Apart from this, the two water treatment systems have no other similarities.
Water Softener and Water Conditioner –The Difference
What sets water softeners apart from water conditioners is how the two systems treat water hardness.
A water softener removes the hardness-causing minerals from the water through a process called ion exchange. This involves removing minerals in exchange for salt.
A water conditioner, on the other hand, doesn’t remove the hardness-causing minerals. Instead, it changes the way they behave and thus, altering the hardness level of the water. Water treated through a conditioning system still contains all the minerals, but they do not cause limescale buildup or any other characteristic hard water problem.
Some water conditioners may also remove certain biological contaminants – bacteria, viruses, and parasites. However, it is not equivalent to or does the same work as a water filter. Water conditioners are also salt-free water treatment devices. They do not add salt to your water supply.
Do You Need a Water Softener or Conditioner in California?
You certainly do!
In case you didn’t already know, water supplied across California is categorized as ‘hard’ to ‘very hard,’ with an average hardness level of 100-300 PPM. So, you need a softener or conditioner to treat the hardness of the water supplied to your home.
